The MapInstall program used to allow me to plug my garmin unit in to start the updates. Once the updates started I could disconnect the unit. The maps would download and the program would prompt me to plug the Garmin unit back in to continue the install.

Garmin Support Center is where you will find answers to frequently asked questions and resources to help with all of your Garmin products. To install on a Windows computer, select Download for Windows. To install on a Mac computer, select Download for Mac. Open the downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Start Garmin Express. Connect your Garmin ® device to your computer using a USB cable.

Tried to download latest upload and was surprised to see a note stating it would take twenty hours!! Just the GPS install took about 2 ½ hours and I got that done. My question - if I download partway, say an hour or two, then disconnect and come back the next.

I have not tried this with Garmin Express. Has anyone been able to do this? The program does say to leave the unit plugged in, but the longest part of the install is downloading the maps to the computer. 16 hours is a long time to have the unit connected to the computer. I do not want to overheat the Garmin battery by having it plugged in too long. I have an AT&T internet connection. It is terrible.

• Although GE is probably the best bet now you can still get the newest version of MapUpdater from:
  http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe
  It works fine on my Windows 10 64Bit machine.
  If you need the MAC version it's at http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg
• FWIW, last time I tried it, MapUpdater ran fine but hung a couple hours into the download. After a few tries I gave up and used Express, which worked properly.
• nuvi 855 update is a little tricky because of the storage space (full NA no longer fits) and the fact the Garmin Express doesn't support SD card install on the 8x5 series. There are ways around this ... cloning is the best option, but you can also install a partial region (like lower 49) and still fit it all in internal storage. Also, realize that you get a very compromised JCV file with the Garmin map download. It is possible to install the full JCV file as a separate download, but it takes some additional effort. If you need additional help, don't hesitate to ask.

  Which is exactly the opposite to what I experienced with this latest map update. :) That being said, it's the first time in the last few updates that I have run into problems with GE.
• I used to try and cram the maps by deleting extra files etc but now I just load the lower 48 states. Same for custom POI's and JCV's.
  My iPhone 6+ is my primary gps now. Soon it will be the 7+ :-)
  GE will suffice now, especially if I can exit it after use. The idea of keeping it running in the background so that it can check for updates and instantly update my Nuvi every 4 months is ludicrous...
• With one device and one map I agree, but with multiple devices and multiple maps it's quite handy :)

• My iPhone 6+ is my primary gps now.

• Trouble in paradise: the 855 is not showing junction views. I tested by simulating a short drive that one of the MVP's had posted here years ago that had two highway merges. I did not see any junction views.
  When doing a Map-info I see just one line: CN North America NT 2017.20
  Is that all that should show on the 855? I will be happy with just that.
  Is the small JCV info embedded in this file?
  There is a 'D3153210A.jcv' file w today's date in Garminjcv folder. The 'drive' has 2.33 GB used and 155 MB free.
  I am willing to 'reset to factory settings and install the latest map (48 states) if it comes to that. I can lose my address book and POI's without any anguish.
• Never mind. I tested with a short simulation in my neighborhood and a junction view did pop-up.
  It was incorrect (wrong ramp) but that is a different issue ....
• The file you identified is the junction view file. Its not part of the map file.
• I knew that. That was an indication that the JCV data was copied to the unit by GE.
  I remembered some Nuvi showing 2 lines (a separate line for JCV) in Map-Info.
  Apparently, in the 855, seeing just one line is normal.

  Junction view has never been shown. You may be thinking of the DEM or 3D map?

  Yes, the CN NA map is the only thing shown on a 855. On a 7x5 you will see the CN NA map and the 3D msp.
  For the JCV file on your 855, you will get much better coverage and photo real views if you delete the JCV file you got with Express, and copy in the much larger JCV file you get with a 7x5 nuvi. You will need a SD card for this, as there is not room in internal storage for the large JCV file. The file name is D3060210A.jcv and its size is 847186 KB. This file needs to go on the SD card in folder GarminJCV. The file you got with Garmin Express on your 855 is only about 25771 KB. If you don't have access to a 7x5 nuvi with the 2017.20 map, go over to POI Factory and you will find a link where you can download it.
• I tried that earlier but my 855 does not recognize SD cards (I tried cards smaller than 2 GB to keep it compatible). I stopped trying to debug that situation when I mostly switched to my iPhone.
  I am lending my 855 to a friend and the regular JCV will be good enough .. better than no GPS!
